About the course:

The course is divided into six units.

AS Units

  • Unit 1: Performing Music
  • Unit 2: Composing
  • Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding

A2 Units

  • Unit 4: Extended Performance
  • Unit 5: Composition and Technical Study
  • Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding

 

AS Music:

Component 1 – Performing Music

This unit gives you the opportunity to perform as a soloist and/or as part of an ensemble. You and your teacher can choose music in any style. Any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) are acceptable as part of a five-six minute assessed performance. Notated and/or improvised performances may be submitted. Your instrumental teacher should be involved in preparation of pieces for your course. Performance at AS level should be of Grade 5 standard. Easier pieces may be played, but your mark will be scaled down. Harder pieces can be played for a higher mark.

Coursework: 30% of AS

 

Component 2 – Composing

This unit encourages you to develop your composition skills leading to the creation of a three minute piece in response to a chosen brief. Five minutes of composition will be expected in total.

Component 3 – Appraising

This unit focuses on listening to familiar music and understanding how it works. Set works from the anthology provide the focus for the detailed study. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with each work as a whole, before learning how to identify important musical features as well as social and historical context.

Examination: 40% of AS

 

A Level Music:

Component 1 – Performing

This component gives you the opportunity to extend your performance skills as soloist and/or as part of an ensemble. You and your teacher can choose music in any style. Any instrument or voice are acceptable as part of an eight minute assessed performance.

Coursework: 30% of A Level

 

Component 2 – Composition And Technical Study

This consists of a composition to a brief set by the examining board, and a free composition in which students can choose their own style and genre of music to compose. Compositions will need to last a minimum of six minute in total.

Coursework: 30% of AS

 

Component 3 – Further Musical Understanding

This component focuses on extended study of the set works. For A level, three set works in each area of study will be examined, two of which will be common to AS level. Students need to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, contexts and language in relation to music they have studied.

Examination: 40% of AS
